Would you let a 14 year old watch the Rambo Movie?
Would you allow your 14 year old to watch the new Rambo movie with his friends? Why ?
The latest Rambo film is inundated with violence, but this, in and of itself, should not dissuade anyone from allowing their 14 year old kid to watch this film. Each kid’s maturity level is different. Plenty of teenagers, by 14 years of age, have been exposed to a lot of violence, and so this would be nothing new for them. Ultimately, if the kid was raised properly, no amount of violently suggestive material is going to cause the kid to act criminally. I watched my first Rambo movie when I was 9 years old, and I grew up to be a productive law abiding adult.
As a parent I would go and watch the film first, and then allow the kid to see it later. Then I would talk to the kid afterwards, and try to focus on all the laudable aspects about the film, such as its emphasis on honor, bravery, doing the unpopular thing, and self-sacrifice – virtues which are in scarce supply in our society today. I think it would be sad to prohibit a 14 year old kid from watching a film that has a decent message, and an especially pertinent message for our superficial narcissistic age, just because it raises the bar on violence.
