If there is anything wrong with this film its the marketing department which is advertising this film as a ghost-horror film when in fact it is really a suspense thriller. Box office receipts will testify to this since the horror crowd avoided it (possibly not enough gore for them) and regular PG-13 crowds don’t know what to make of it (i.e. the people who go see THE COVENANT, THE OMEN remake, WHEN A STRANGLER CALLS, etc. – teenagers) from the trailers.
The simple fact is that director Asif Kapadia and screenwriter Adam Sussman have crafted a character piece about the results of a traumatic childhood experience on an adult woman (played in the film by Sarah Michelle Gellar). And its a damn fine film as well. Like its over looked predecessors THE ASTRONAUNT’S WIFE, THE FORGOTTEN, and to an extent its older predecessors THE STEPFORD WIVES, ROSEMARY’S BABY, and THE TENANT, THE RETURN is built around one character’s influence and experiences to the world around them and how they influence that world.
Joanna Mills (Gellar) is a traveling business woman who returns to her hometown in Texas after a 15 year absence to discover that the nightmares she’s been plagued with her entire life stem from an incident in her past that she’s all but tried to forget, but once she returns home details in the nightmares start to resemble things in the real world that she should not know.
Soon, Joanna finds herself trying to discover the truth about her nightmares while also confronting the truth about herself and her family.
Gellar gives another great performance trading in her tough-girl personae from her television show BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER to bring audiences a deeply troubled and vulnerable young woman who hides behind being an unmitigated success at her job.
Making his American feature directing début Kapadia is exceptional at bringing out the best performance from Gellar as well as the rest of his cast. This film could have easily been adapted as a straight to television film but Kapadia has elevated the material to new heights. This also marks Sussman’s first produced feature script which shows he’s more about telling a good story with compelling characters rather than a derivative copy of the latest box office hit. Both of these individuals have a lot going for them if this film has anything to say about it.
